Borisov castle
In 1776 the king Stanislav August bestowed the Borisov castle and the land around it on the prince Mikhail Radziwill. Mikhail was a magnate of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the last owner of this land. He transformed the old castle into a majestic wooden building with a high stone foundation. The castle has remained in a good condition till the18th century.
Borisov became a part of the Russian Empire in 1793 as a result of the Second Partition of Rzecz Pospolita. It was proclaimed the capital of Borisov county by the Order of Her Majesty Catherine II. At the beginning of the 19th century Mikhail Radziwill left the castle and settled in his estate in the old part of Borisov.
"Zamchische" is a heroic and glorious place. It was founded at the end of the 13th century and became the centre of the city. This place was located on the border with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Russian Empire, so it had a long history of wars and destruction. The castle has been repeatedly burned down and recovered. Water and land trade routes intersected in Borisov and made our city the commercial and industrial center. No wonder, that in the 16th century Borisov was represented to the Pope as one of the most important and powerful cities of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
For centuries the castle performed an important public function and was the center of Borisov county. In 1557 Borisov was granted the right to an autonomous municipal administration (the so-called Magdeburg Right). In1565 town's coat of arms was established by Sigismund II August. The coat of arms had two stylized towers on a silver background with a passage between them and Saint Peter above the towers holding a key in his right hand. The right of Borisov to self-government was confirmed in 1577, 1595, 1640 and 1792.
In 1798 Mikhail Radziwill left the castle, but it continued to be the place of noble assembly. Over time the castle began to declain. In late 19th century one part of the castle was used as a prison, the other part was a luxury villa of Mr. Engelfeld. Its beauty and the unique and glamorous decor were as good as the best summer villas in the suburb of Saint Petersburg. This part of the castle is called "a magic castle".
Unfortunately, only a few sections of the walls and a plaque denoting the historical value of this place remind us of its former glory.
