Shukhov Water Tower

The water tower in Engels street in Borisov is a graceful metal structure in the shape of a rotating hyperboloid. The tower was designed and constructed by the great Russian engineer and scientist Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) in 1927 for the need of the train station.

Only 11 Shukhov towers have been preserved by our time. He built more than 200 of them. Shukhov developed varieties of light-weight hyperboloid towers. One of his best known work is Shukhov  Shabolovka Radio and TV Tower. The Eiffel Tower in Paris has a similar design and it's one of the most-visited monuments in the world.

Borisov Shukhov Tower is 27 meters high. It was built in the shape of a hyperboloid with a metal water tank on the top of the tower. There's a small balcony around the tank and you can climb it using a spiral staircase. Vladimir Shukhov invented hyperboloid towers and patanted them. The uniqueness of this construction is the fact that a lattice tower was made of straight metal rods, fixed together not by welding but rivets. There were water pipes in the tunnel, which brought water from the tower to the train station.

Unfortunately the tower is not exploited nowadays. It isn't visited by tourists. It's getting old and goes into oblivion. It's just so tempting to restore this unique monument of constructivism in all its glory.
